As of June 9, there have been 222 detections reported, and 47,091,293 birds affected by avian influenza (AI). In response, Green Valley Poultry Farm in Abingdon increased the already strict biosecurity measures to protect a million egg-laying hens it houses. Production manager Jim Fogleman explains the focus includes the key areas:
- Increasing protocols for controlled movement of workers, birds, vehicles and equipment
- Ensuring feed and water are not at risk of virus contamination
- Limiting contact with domesticated and wild birds
